Screw Conveyors & Scalping Drums

A screw conveyor is located at the bottom of the blast system. Because of its auger type design, it will transport abrasive and contaminants that will fall to the bottom to the elevator belt. Screw conveyors are designed to handle the volume of abrasive that is used and the type and amount of contaminant that is generated in the blast process. To maximize production of the blast machine, it is important to have a properly designed and fully functional screw conveyor.

The scalping drum is located at the top of the system. The materials that are carried by the elevator bucket are left at one end of the scalping drum. Scalping drums are made of two screw conveyors (internal and external) and a screen mesh in between the two. The design allows transportation of the material and ensures that contaminants are maintained inside the screen and abrasive is left on the outside. The internal conveyor sends the contaminants outside the system and the external conveyor spreads abrasive evenly over a separator, which then separates good and bad abrasive.

As with screw conveyors, the scalping drum is designed with the blast system in mind. Contact Pangborn® if you need to have these critical components in your abrasive handling system inspected or upgraded.
